How to Make a Viking Apron and Embellish It! In this class you will learn how to construct a basic underdress and both the Danish and wrap-style Apron. Once we look at construction, we will view sample techniques to personalize your apron with embroidery, amber, beads, straps, and brooches. Barding – Garb for Your Steed An overview of horse barding construction and research. Topics of discussion will be introduction to cloth horse coverings, period sources and research, barding by culture and timeframe, form and function. Design and pattern-making, materials and techniques, fitting and sacking-out will also be covered. Examples will be available for examination. Making a Dress or Tunic From a Neckbone You will take your measurements and transform them into a simple dress or tunic. Basic knowledge and identification of a sewing machine is required. You will be able to authorize for seam ripper, and should leave with a finished garment. Gussets and Gores and Coats – Oh, My! Turn your neckbone dress or tunic into a coat. (Attendance at the Neckbone Dress/Tunic class would be helpful, but is not required. Seam Ripper Authorization required.) You should leave with a mostly finished coat. Please bring the following materials to class: 6-8 yards heavy coat-type fabric, prewashed; matching thread; scissors; measuring tape; pins and pincushion; pen and paper; seam ripper. Middle Eastern Costuming Tassels or coins? Beads, bangles or shisha? Skirts or pants? How many layers should I wear? Should I show my belly? How do I tie a turban? How much jewelry is too much? How many colors can I wear at once? Lady Fatinah will present styles of garb from the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe and India. Students will look at basic garb as well as embellishments and accents. There will be some handouts, but bring a pencil and notebook to get the most out of this class. Award Cord Fiber FrenzyHave you ever gotten an award? Seen an award? Know someone who got an award? All those cool danglies hang off a cord. And, those cords actually come from somewhere! They're hand-made by members of the Kingdom. (And, their Majesties always need more cords!) Drop in and make an award cord, or help make an award cord, or support someone who does. No experience needed! We'll have warped inkle looms. Lucets and instructions. Very period Coke bottles on strings for Baroness Bridget's Viking Braids. And, do you remember making lanyards at summer camp when you were a kid? You don't have to do that with horrid plastic! A lanyard out of thin ribbon makes a rockin' award cord! (Does this all sound very arcane and scary? Don't worry! We'll be taking this down to the easiest level. If you have two mostly functioning hands, you can do this!) Stop by for a minute or an hour. The class will discuss how to turn a store bought cooler into something that does not look like a modern day cooler. Discussion will also revolve around other simple items, such as modern day tents, etc. There are no safety requirements, ages should be limited to someone old enough to follow instructions. Introduction to BlacksmithingBasic introduction to blacksmithing. Tools and techniques will be discussed and demonstrated and each student will complete several items for "every day" SCA use. Instructor is a full time blacksmith with a Doctoral degree in metals, and a published author and researcher in the field of metalworking. Students will NOT wear garb due to being around fire and hot metal. Clothing required is cotton clothes, no open toe shoes/sandals. When Bad Things Happen To Good Events, Or How To Survive Being An Autocrat This class is for the new or gently used autocrat. The focus is on planning an event, creating new events, working with volunteer staff, required paperwork and budgeting. Combat Archery – Combined Arms Tactics for the SCA MeleeClass will be one part lecture and one part demonstration and field work. Discussion to cover integration of combat archery into your small to medium-sized unit. Period military use of archery on the battlefield, strategy and tactics will be compared and contrasted against the SCA sport of melee combat and effective roles for combat archery based on different unit missions. Review of current SCA combat archery technology and equipment. Discussion of issues facing the combat archer on the field of battle.
